Import / Export Profile

This would give the user the option to export their profile and import it on another MyBB Forum running the same version, so they don't have to rewrite their bio, location, msn, icq, yahoo, website and such.
To be able to save the profile as a .xml or some file type, go to another forum and import your profile!

This would save the user time, instead of writing up a new profile everywhere he goes.
This could be similar to vBulletin's vCard, I guess.

  5. I never thought about it, but you could possibly implement the avatar and signature into the .xml (or whatever) file that you download. You go to one forum, setup your entire avatar, signature, website, bio, icq number, aim, msn, yahoo, location, birthdate, and sex, Export the the MyCard (or whatever) save it to hdd, register on another forum, go to Import Profile, and import your entire profile.

    I know your entire profile is in the database, including avatar/signature, so it should be possible to package all this info into one file, to be read again when imported and change all your settings.

    Your avatar isn't in the database... just as an example:

  8. WOW! Now that's an incredibly great concept. I have never even thought about this. Of course it must be thought out well to make sure abuse doesn't occur but heck...I am voting BIG TIME for this. I have so many mybb sites and if members could just click "export profile" then come to another of my sites and click "import profile" then get a new activation code to make sure it's valid....and BAM...new member! WOW that would rock...it could even grab signatures and avatar possibly in a zip.

    OMG...thinking more about this idea...just makes me tingle. Do you realize how BIG of an idea this really is. It should be attempted to be implemented asap before it's stolen. This could make mybb HUGE. A person could have their profile zip on their desktop and whenever they hit a mybb site just import the zip. OMG this is HUGE. It would make member acquisition an entirely new thing for forums.

    Dr. Small...you get my vote for best idea yet for ANY forums idea on ANY forum EVER! You rule bro.

    WOW.. I just have to edit my post and say more.

    MybbCard could be the next big thing on the web! It could be used in so many ways. Other software would definitely steal this idea if we did it. I could see places like blogs (wordpress) implementing similar ideas. The potential for this is phenominal. Please please make this a TOP priority.

    Well, I know that it isn't to a certain degree, and that it is.
    [explain]When a user goes to set their avatar, they have 3 options,
    1) To Browse the default Avatar Gallery
    2) Place a URL to their pre-existing one on the net.
    3) Upload their avatar to the forum.

    Now, I know, that with all three of these options, the url to their avatar has to
    be in the database. I was only thinking about me, I guess, because I never upload
    avatars, I always link to mine. Therefore, when it extracts the info from the
    database, it also has the avatar url.

    But see, this only works if you have your avatar linked. I wish this could be setup
    to like 'auto-detect' what avatar setting you are using. If you have your avatar linked,
    it only adds that info to your contact card. If you have the avatar uploaded, it downloads
    the avatar in a zip, and when you import it, it uploads the avatar with it.[/explain]

  13. Ugh...Dr. Small....you can easily download the avatar if it's on the server and have it placed into a zip file along with an xml file for site import. The avatar being remotely hosted or locally shouldn't be a problem. Even if the avatar is in the gallery...it could still be downloaded into the zip.

  16. This would suck as a modification because in order for this to take full advantage it would need to be on EVERY mybb install.

    As for avatars...this is totally doable. It can detect your avatar type...and if it's a file then it would download it into the zip. The zip would also include an XML file that would have the user information.

    I really think this idea is the biggest and best idea yet for mybb. It's unique and could certainly be an attractive feature that would do nothing but help spread the mybb software. It would encourage people to install mybb en masse.
