Improve "Board Open/Close"

The opening and closing of a board works pretty good except there should be an option in the ACP to allow groups other than administrators to access the board while it is closed. When I got the board set up yesterday, I wanted the board only closed to guests and registered users, but I couldn't select the groups that I wanted to allow access while the board was closed. This could be useful at times.

  1. I think you're missing it's point if you are going to allow other users ... you're supposed to close your board when you are upgrading it etc. :-)

  2. In that case you should be using usergroup permissions to "close" the forum for particular usergroups. You can do this by editing the usergroup in the Admin CP and selecting "no" for the "Can View Forum" permission.

    The Board open/closed is supposed to be a simple switch to disable access for everybody (except administrators) so that upgrades or maintenance can be performed with as least access to the database as possible.

  3. I like this idea, like having only your forum staff be able to log into an offline board. Its widely used on invision boards

  4. I know about the database thing, but that would easy to change if I could just choose which groups to access it and even if you somehow disable the admin group by accident, Superadmins would still be allowed on the message board.

    On another forum that I go to, They had to close down the forum to look over topics and such, clean things up, and made some new rules also. I know they would have wanted the staff on to help them out if they could of. Now, on that forum, there is a mod that does what I would like done on here. To edit each group and do that would take a lot longer to do. I do understand the meaning behind the simple close/open feature, but when that happens, I can just uncheck the groups which would only take a few seconds instead of having to go into each group and edit the permissions which would take a lot longer to do.
